PlayStation CEO thinks VR’s bright future is still years away

Sony offering PSVR owners a free camera adapter to use with the PS5 just about tells you that the corporate has no plans to release a replacement computer game headset anytime soon. Now, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has confirmed to The Washington Post in an interview that there “won’t be any immediate leaps forward” from the corporate when it involves computer game . He didn’t mention hardware especially , but supported what he said, it’s unclear when we’ll see the next-gen PSVR.

That doesn’t mean PlayStation is stepping back from computer game . Ryan told the publication that the corporate believes VR will “represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment,” though it probably won’t happen anytime soon. He also said that the corporate is looking forward to seeing where the teachings it learned from PSVR will take it, ensuring PlayStation’s continued investment in computer game . He said:

“I think we’re quite a couple of minutes from the longer term of VR. PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and that we definitely believe at some point within the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment. Will it’s this year? No. Will it’s next year? No. But will it come at some stage? We believe that. And we’re very happy with all the experience that we’ve gained with PlayStation VR, and that we look forwarding to seeing where that takes us within the future.”

In addition, Ryan talked about Sony’s hopes to grow PlayStation Plus’ subscriber numbers. the corporate will offer Plus subscribers on the PS5 access to “20 free top-tier PS4 games” in order that they can give older games a try. When it involves upcoming games for its next—gen console, Ryan said that putting technologies like “3D Audio and haptic feedback… within the hands of an excellent game developer” will take “immersiveness… to subsequent level.”

Ryan expects more games with rich storytelling and narrative elements, as well, since they’ll be far more powerful “when they’re realistic,” which are some things the PS5 is capable of providing. “[T]here’s this type of happy kind of synergy between technology progress and our great ability to inform stories,” he explained. “I see that’s a trend which will only continue.”

With its visual scripting language, Blueprints, and built-in support for all major VR headsets, it's a perfect tool for designers, artists, and engineers who want to bring their VR visions to life. This book will guide you step-by-step through a series of projects that cover essential concepts and techniques for VR development in UE4.You will begin by learning how to think about (and design for) VR, before proceeding to set up a development environment. You'll focus on a series of practical projects, taking you through essential VR concepts. Through these exercises, you'll learn how to set up UE4 projects that run effectively in VR, build player locomotion schemes, and use hand controllers to interact with the virtual environment. You'll then create user interfaces in 3D space, use the editor's VR mode to build environments directly in VR, and profile and optimize the worlds you've built. Finally, you'll explore more advanced topics, such as displaying stereo media in VR, networking in Unreal, and using plugins to extend the engine.By the end of this book, you will have gained a solid understanding of why the relevant tools and techniques work as they do, so you can use the techniques and concepts learned here as a springboard for further learning and exploration in VR projects. What you will learnUnderstand design principles and concepts for building VR applicationsSet up your development environment with Unreal Blueprints and C++Create a player character with several locomotion schemesEvaluate and solve performance problems in VR to maintain high frame ratesDisplay mono and stereo videos in VRExtend Unreal Engine's capabilities using various pluginsWho this book is forThis virtual reality book is for anyone interested in learning how to develop virtual reality games and applications using UE4.
